6 people injured after shooting outside Brighton Heights funeral in Pittsburgh – WPXI

PITTSBURGH — Several people were shot outside a funeral in the Brighton Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

Multiple police departments responded to a ShotSpotter alert around midday in the 3700 block of Brighton Road.

The funeral held at Destiny of Faith Church was for John Hornezes, one of the victims of the Cedar Avenue shootings earlier this month.

UPDATE 5:53 PM

According to the latest statement from Pittsburgh Public Safety, one of the six victims was not shot, but was injured while trying to escape the shooting.

UPDATE 5:30 p.m.

Channel 11’s Amy Hudak spoke with a church member near the stage.

UPDATE 4:45 p.m.

Brighton Road has been reopened.

UPDATE 4 p.m.

Police said there was reason to believe specific people were targeted in the shooting and that there were multiple shooters. No further details are available from investigators at this time.

UPDATE 3:55 p.m.

ATF officers are on the scene to assist Pittsburgh police with the investigation, according to a social media post.

The Reverend George Moses, who performed the funeral, spoke to Channel 11’s Nicole Ford. He said a woman told him to take cover as gunshots rang out.

At a press briefing, Mayor Ed Gainey pleaded with the community for those with information to come forward.

The Destiny Faith Church pastor told media at a press briefing that she could not say whether shots were fired inside or outside the church.

UPDATE 3:40 p.m.

Four men, aged 20, 24, 27 and 66 were killed. A 57-year-old woman was among five adult victims. More information about the juvenile victim is not available at this time.

UPDATE 3:37 PM

A victim initially listed in critical condition has been upgraded to stable, according to Pittsburgh police. All six victims are now in stable condition.

Pittsburgh police are asking anyone with information to call their Violent Crimes Unit at 412-323-7161.

Pittsburgh police just removed the funeral casket from the church. Mayor Ed Gainey has now arrived on the scene.

Channel 11’s Nicole Ford is at the scene and can be seen police examining evidence around an SUV where the driver’s window is smashed.

UPDATE 14:00

Pittsburgh police confirmed that six people were shot outside the church during a funeral.

Officials said five of the victims were taken to Allegheny General Hospital and one victim was taken to Children’s Hospital. Police have not confirmed whether this means the victim is a minor.

Police said it was “more than likely” a firearm was used, but are still investigating the matter.

At this time, no information has been released on any suspects.

Police have always said they will still be at the scene for several hours to investigate.

UPDATE 1:40 p.m.

We just spoke with a woman inside the church who spoke about the senseless violence.

UPDATE 1:09 p.m.:

Law enforcement sources told Target 11’s Rick Earle that one victim is in critical condition and the other five people who were shot are expected to be fine.

UPDATE: 1:06 PM:

A Pittsburgh Public Schools spokesperson told Channel 11 that students in the Pittsburgh Public School District had a half day today, so there was no impact on the nearby school in Pittsburgh. Morrow.

Sources tell Channel 11 that at least 6 people were shot dead.
