Being teased by Norm Macdonald left Courtney Thorne-Smith ‘Giddy’
Actress Courtney Thorne-Smith admitted she felt dizzy after being roasted by Norm Macdonald on Late at night with Conan O’Brien.
The momentous moment came in 1997. Macdonald, who was a regular on O’Brien’s show, had been the first guest of the evening. When Thorne-Smith arrived next, the Saturday Night Live the comedian slipped onto the sofa, but still remained heavily involved in the conversation.
After discussing his departure from the hit TV series Melrose Square, Thorne-Smith started talking about his next movie, President of the council — notable because of his co-star, Carrot Top. It was at this point that Macdonald began to dive happily. “If there’s Carrot Top in it, do you know what the right name would be for that? Poison at the box officeÂ», Declared the comedian during one of his many zingers.
Video of the segment has been around social media lately, following Macdonald’s unexpected death. Looking back, Thorne-Smith revealed that the experience was a highlight of her career – even though a project she was promoting was the butt of Macdonald’s jokes.

â€œWhen Norm took over, I was like, ‘Oh, thank you, my God and Norm Macdonald’. It was a blessing, “said the actress. Vanity Fair, noting that she “wasn’t thrilled” to be promoting President of the council in the first place. “Look, if I had thought that President of the council was my way to an Oscar, I might have been offended. I do not have. [Laughs] So it was a joy to be teased about it.
Thorne-Smith further explained that she was already a Macdonald fan before that night, which made the experience “extra super exciting”. “I loved her take on it,” admitted the actress. “When you are a fan of a comedian and he laughs at you, is there anything better? It’s just heaven, because you’re in their joke. They might be laughing at you, but it doesn’t matter because you are with them right now.
More than 20 years later, Thorne-Smith still enjoys looking back on the experience. “You know those good nights where you hang out with your friends and start laughing and you can’t stop, and you have that feeling of fullness?” That’s how I felt, “she revealed.” I wasn’t expecting to have a great time, and I had a great time. That’s what I left with; just stunned at how fun it was.I got a bullet.
