The prisoner’s dilemma is a standard game theory situation often taught in business schools. Comcast CEO Brian Roberts and ViacomCBS President Shari Redstone experience it in real time as they plan to work together.

Comcast’s NBCUniversal and ViacomCBS are struggling to keep up with the biggest players in streaming video. While Netflix, Amazon and Disney all have over 100 million subscribers to their flagship video services, NBCUniversal’s Peacock has 42 million US subscribers – most of which do not pay for the service – and ViacomCBS’s Paramount +. has less than 36 million subscribers. ViacomCBS doesn’t reveal the specific amount of Paramount + paying customers, but it said earlier this year that it has 36 million streaming subscribers, including Showtime and other niche products.

AT & T’s WarnerMedia and Discovery also offer small-scale streaming products. They announced their intention to merge earlier this year. This left NBCUniversal and ViacomCBS as the biggest remaining streaming players.

Roberts and Redstone have had conversations to explore ways companies can work together, according to people familiar with the matter. Investment bankers are injecting ideas into the two companies in hopes of securing what may be the last big mainstream media merger charge for some time, said the people, who asked not to be named because discussions are private. Spokesmen for Comcast, National Amusements and ViacomCBS declined to comment.

One of the options being considered is to bundle Peacock and Paramount + in international markets, as The Information reported earlier this year. The two companies are planning global expansions and the partnership is relatively fluid.

Another option is a merger or acquisition, but there is a litany of complications down this road. Neither ViacomCBS nor NBCUniversal are actively pursuing a merger at this time, according to people familiar with the matter.

While it may not be urgent to merge, the two companies will eventually need more scale to compete with larger players. They could partner or merge, or they could attempt to merge with Warner Bros. Discovery when / if this deal closes in mid-2022. A merger with Warner Bros. Discovery might be more suitable for both ViacomCBS and NBCUniversal.

But only one of the two could join Warner Bros. Discovery. It would leave the other company out in the cold – maybe for years.

This is the essence of the prisoner’s dilemma.

Working together can ensure that both companies are better off than they started out, but standing up to each other can be the best scenario for one company and the worst for the other. (This isn’t the perfect example of the prisoner’s dilemma, as companies can’t really betray each other, finding themselves in a situation where both are worse.)

Fusion problems

Regulators are unlikely to allow a combined NBCUniversal-ViacomCBS to own the two broadcast stations, NBC and CBS. It is likely that any merger will have to include a divestiture of one of the broadcast networks as well as any local NBC or CBS TV subsidiaries that overlap in the same markets.

This immediately decreases the value of both companies. If CBS is divested, NBCUniversal would get Paramount + without CBS programming, including live National Football League games and NCAA March Madness. If the companies decide to divest NBC, ViacomCBS will not get “Sunday Night Football” and other popular NBC broadcast shows.

While it is possible that companies are trying to argue that broadcast networks are like cable networks and do not need separate ownership, regulators may not take this as a reasonable argument. According to Horowitz Research, about 40% of Americans own a digital antenna to get free live programming as well as streaming video. Broadcast networks have historically fought for valuable programming. Putting two under one roof would stifle these tendering situations.

The second obstacle is structure. Comcast could simply acquire ViacomCBS, repurchasing the voting shares of Shari Redstone as part of a deal. But ViacomCBS has an enterprise value of around $ 40 billion and would charge a decent-sized premium to sell, two of the people said. Even with large divestitures, a deal would be costly.

Comcast shareholders, who are more likely to encourage a split between NBCUniversal and Comcast, according to MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett, might not like a decision to buy ViacomCBS and divest one of the networks.

Roberts could bring out NBCUniversal and merge with ViacomCBS – similar to the WarnerMedia-Discovery deal. This could force him to relinquish control of NBCUniversal. If Redstone ends up having more economic control over a merged NBCUniversal-ViacomCBS, it may want to run the business, or choose who is in charge, for at least a number of years. Roberts and Redstone will have to come to an agreement on economic control and voting if that option is chosen.

A bundle through a business partnership circumvents M&A issues – and ultimately is the most likely “first step” scenario – but it gives companies less flexibility over the offers than a merger would. It is also possible that the needle does not move enough for either company.

Wait for the discovery of Warner Bros.

NBCUniversal or ViacomCBS could theoretically correspond to Warner Bros. Discovery, because David Zaslav’s future company will not have a broadcast network. This would eliminate the need for an assignment. Combining with HBO Max and Discovery + would also arguably be a more robust streaming offering, in terms of content, than simply bundling the assets of NBCUniversal and ViacomCBS.

But the size of Warner Bros. Discovery combined with ViacomCBS or NBCUniversal could potentially pose regulatory problems, depending on how regulators in the Biden administration view the entertainment market. Even WarnerMedia’s agreement with Discovery is not guaranteed.

The choice to strike a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery is forcing NBCUniversal and ViacomCBS to wait another two or three years, given how long it would take to merge to get regulatory approval – first for WarnerMedia and Discovery, then for the second merger. There would also be integration costs and issues with two big deals going so quickly.

For the company that did not merge with Warner Bros. Discovery, the way forward would likely be the rollout of some of the smaller streaming players. like Lionsgate and AMC Networks, or push for an acquisition of Sony Pictures.

Merge or wait both present headaches. This is why investment bankers are paid dearly.

Knight’s article failed to capture how much we have researched the issue that ultimately led us to this important decision. Great masterpieces have traveled from time to time, under very rigorous protocols. This one will too. While we appreciate Knight’s continued interest in the work, his play was an omission: he just didn’t report the full set of facts, which resulted in misleading and inaccurate conclusions.

It’s a musical that laughs at white people for being so stupid. Maybe Lee is confusing “The Music Man” with something that is representative of the local culture and is actually a celebration of a sanitized version of America: Main Street USA at Disneyland.

Current TCM hosts and audiences owe much to the modest and elegant Osborne. An actor (taught by Lucille Ball), a respected print and television journalist and (I’m jealous!) Someone who has had long, almost weekly conversations with Hedy Lamarr, Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland.

It may seem at first that TV is a declining media channel, but the data is somewhat hanging. U.S. networks are frustrated with Nielsen’s media consumption reports not because viewership numbers are dropping, but because consumption metrics on other devices like tablets or phones are not being measured. Are people really watching TV less or are they just watching it on different devices?

For networks, this battle is important insofar as audience figures influence demand from advertisers. But if you’re an entrepreneur, a small business owner, or an expert … you really don’t have to worry about these trends.

Why? Simple: the Perception of someone on TV is still incredibly powerful. As entrepreneurs, we need to find credibility markers that can overcome skepticism in the minds of our prospects. Few marketing tactics do this more effectively than earned media and advertising, and few forms of advertising look better than broadcast television. A live TV interview is certainly good exposure, but a better solution is to grab your clip and incorporate it into your digital marketing efforts.

I have done over 60 live TV interviews over the past three years. And here’s the kicker: I booked all of these appearances myself without the help of a PR agency or publicist. If you’re curious about using TV as a way to boost your authority, but want to know how sausage is made before you dive in, here are four steps you can take to get started.

Identify your local target stations

My experience is that of television broadcast in the United States, so I will talk about it here. You must first determine the market or markets closest to you. This handy Station Index link gives you the Top 100 Designated Market Areas (DMAs); find your city or metro area, then note the different broadcasting stations.

Once on the site of a station, you will look for a contact page. Almost all stations have a page like this so that they can receive topical advice. Write down the station’s email address and phone number, then put that information aside.

Before going any further: Know that it is not necessary to have a publicist to get into television. However, this painstaking work is one of the main reasons hiring can help. Publicists do this research to free you up, and seasoned publicists often have personal relationships with producers that can dramatically improve your chances of being booked.

Look for a viable news hook

To make the news, your TV pitch must to be new. You can certainly get started with pitching your story to a TV producer to see if they’ll feature you, but including a timely information hook or awareness day can add spice to your reach.

The first time I did a live TV interview, I discussed smartphone addiction and how online marketing is manipulating us. But the way I added urgency to this pitch was to tie it into National Stress Awareness Week in November. The news hooks create a forcing mechanism for a producer; if they want to reserve your location, they must reserve it now and not “someday”. Think about ways you can connect your expertise to a current or upcoming news hook, and your odds will improve.

If you’re not a big news watcher, consider setting up Google Alerts or Talkwalker Alerts to keep you in the know. I teach all my clients to set up alerts for 10 to 30 terms in their sector so that they can keep abreast of the latest buzz in their sector without being stuck in the news. You can configure these alerts for weekly, daily, or real-time delivery.

Present an appropriate segment to their audience

When developing your pitch, it is important to emphasize why your pitch is ideal for the point of sale audience. Why do people want to hear about this topic and why do they want to hear about it now? Sell ​​the story first, then explain why you are the right expert to come and discuss the issue at hand.

Call the TV channel and ask to be connected to a producer. If you log in, give a high-level pitch for your story, then ask if you can send more details in an email. You can also try digging into LinkedIn or using an email address data scraper like Voila Norbert to find the producer’s contact details. Finding the right sitter is important, and sometimes that one step alone makes the difference between being reserved and being ignored.

Follow up on your pitch two to three times over the next few days while the topic is still hot. If your topic is really hot and directly related to the breaking news, a next day or same day follow-up isn’t out of the question, but don’t overdo it if you haven’t heard from after a few follow-ups. .

Nail your interview, then acquire your clip

The television moves quickly; be prepared to rearrange your schedule for a potential opportunity the same day or the next. Go over the basics of media training before you go live. I like to memorize a few stats related to the topic of the interview and then lead with those stats to make myself comfortable. As an added bonus, stats and research are a great way to appear more authoritative.

The last step is honestly the most important step of all – especially if you are an online entrepreneur – and that is to get a copy of your clip. The TV producer who booked you might be able to provide you with a link, but if it’s too busy, I use a service like TV Video Clips as a built-in security. For $ 60, you can get an HD copy of your clip if you order it within 30 days of your appearance.

Please keep in mind that reposting your clip in its entirety for the purpose of mass distribution is prohibited. However, you can share still images or short snippets of appearances and integrate them into your marketing and website to give your audience a wow effect.

Mississippi State Bulldogs NCAA CWS Baseball Championship T-Shirts, More Fan Gear

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Will Bednar and Landon Sims combined on a hit, Mississippi State scored early and strengthened their lead, and the Bulldogs won their first National Championship with a 9-0 victory over Vanderbilt in the decisive third game of the College World Series final on Wednesday night.

Bednar, working on three days off, walked three of the top five hitters he faced before retiring 15 in a row. He handed the game over to the Bulldogs star closer to start the seventh, and Vandy broke the draw when Carter Young scored in the middle of the field with a putout in the eighth.

It was the first hit at CWS since 2014, and it looked like the whole town of Starkville, Mississippi was at TD Ameritrade Park to witness it.

When third baseman Kamren James pitched first for the final, the Bulldogs’ dugout emptied and around 100 fans jumped from the stands to celebrate as Josh Hatcher waved a national championship flag around the infield. Players then walked the warning trail reaching fans up to five times.

“You lose the first game of the series and you know how much our community and our school want this trophy. … When you’re gonna do something legendary, it’s gonna be hard. The reason we are champions is because we have a strong and resilient squad. It was built over time.

Bednar (9-1), whose 15 strikeouts in his Omaha debut against Texas on June 20 were the most here in 25 years, made four against Vandy (49-18) and was named CWS MVP.

The National Championship is the first of a team sport for the State of Mississippi (50-18) and it was held during the Bulldogs’ 12th appearance at CWS. Only Florida State (23) and Clemson (12) have been to Omaha at least as many times without winning a title.

Tanner and Clark hit a homerun in the seventh inning by four runs to put the game out of reach against an offense from Vanderbilt who only had seven hits and three runs in the last 25 innings of the Finals.

“We didn’t play our best baseball towards the end,” said Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin. “Crossing the regional was moving, crossing the super regional was moving, and it wasn’t easy here. And then there was the tidal wave of momentum on the other side. You could feel it and it was real.

Mississippi State eliminated Kumar Rocker (14-4) in the fifth. Four of the top-five hitters in the inning singles, and the projected top-10 pick in the draft left his team 5-0 down in their last appearance for Vanderbilt.

“He meant so much to our program, so much to varsity baseball, so much to the SEC,” said Corbin. “He is the best reflection of his parents. It is a great praise. He just did everything right. I love this young man.

It was the second time in three CWS starts that Rocker wasn’t at his best, in part due to a weaker defense behind him.

The Commodores made six errors in the second and third games of the final and 13 in seven CWS games. The Bulldogs have been faultless in their seven games.

Wednesday’s game ended a CWS unlike any other since it began in 1947. There was no CWS last year due to the pandemic, and COVID-19 was never forgotten during the return of the event, even though the stadium was at full capacity.

Positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing left North Carolina state with only half of its roster available in a 3-1 loss to Vanderbilt last Friday. That night, a total of eight players had tested positive and prompted the NCAA to remove the Wolfpack from the tournament due to COVID-19 protocols.

A second bracket final between NC State and Vandy was declared without a competition, and the Commodores advanced to the final to win a second straight title and a third since 2014.

They won the opener 8-2 after scoring seven runs in the first inning, but they didn’t do much for the rest of the series.

Mississippi State won 13-2 in Game 2 and then, thanks to Bednar, was able to claim their title victory.

“Great comeback for them,” Corbin said. “They realized they weren’t out of this when we beat them in the first game.”

It has been 36 years since the still-talked-about 1985 Bulldogs with future major league greats Will Clark and Rafael Palmeiro became one of the best, if not the best, teams not to win from CWS.

The 85-team won their first two games in Omaha, then lost two games in a row and left. The next four MSU teams to make the CWS haven’t won more than one game here.

The 2013 Bulldogs advanced to the finals and went up in flames, swept away by UCLA and only scored one point in both games. The 2018 squad didn’t fight much in the bracket final against Oregon State, and the 2019 squad took a ninth inning lead in an elimination game against Louisville.

The Home Run Derby clashes will be revealed in a special Home Run Derby Bracket Show July 7 at 10 p.m. on ESPN, following Wednesday night’s baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Marlins. MLB Draft on ESPN

To increase visibility, the MLB moved the draft to coincide with All-Star Game weekend. ESPN will broadcast nationally the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft on Sunday, July 11 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Ravech will anchor coverage with ESPN MLB Insider and Draft Expert Kiley McDaniel. Analysts Perez, Peterson and Chris Burke will contribute throughout the event, with insider Jeff Passan reporting from the Bellco Theater to the Colorado Convention Center, the site of the MLB draft.
