Just when you thought golfing in vastly different time zones for viewing in the US was over, it isn’t. Men’s golf at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will kick off on July 28 and last through August 1 at the Kasumigaseki Country Club just outside Tokyo, and several of the world’s biggest stars will compete against each other.

The group of 60 golfers in this year’s golf competition – just the second since 1904 – are highlighted by world No.1 player Jon Rahm, who will represent Spain alongside No.1-ranked Adri Arnaus. 166. The other 25 top players joining Rahm in Tokyo are Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Xander Sc Chaudele, Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Hideki Matsuyama and Paul Casey.

Olympic golf format

The format of this year’s golf competition is the same as the Rio 2016 Olympics when Justin Rose won the gold medal. The 60 competitors will play four days of stroke play. It’s a big change from how golf looked at the Olympics 120 years ago. In the last competition before golf took a century-long hiatus, golfers were required to play 36 qualifying stroke play holes and five games of 36 holes each. The 1904 champion, George Lyon of Canada, played 197 holes in six days.

This year won’t be that difficult, but it will be a lot of fun to see the best in the world in a situation we don’t normally see them in. The closest professional golf is to playing for a country through the normal season rhythms are the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup. Add in a few big names that were absent in Rio, and it should be a fantastic event as a great summer of golf begins to come to an end.

Here is how you can watch and track during the four days. Note that while the event starts Thursday in Japan, it’s actually Wednesday night in the United States. It will end very early Sunday morning.
